Currency

Currency answers one question for every store: which currencies does this store take? It holds the list of the world's currencies, with their coins and notes, and records which of them are switched on for each store. When that changes, Currency tells the other Hii Retail services.

The switching on and off is normally done by the customer's ERP system, through the Currency API. A person can also do it by hand in the Configuration Portal. Either way, a currency can be switched on for the whole company, for a group of stores or for one store, and everything below that level takes it too.

The customer's ERP, or a person in the Configuration Portal, switches currencies on and off. Currency saves each change in Configuration (CCC), which works out which stores take what. Currency then sends messages to Store Data and cash counting, and apps read the list through the Currency API.

What it handles​

The currency list179 currencies from the ISO 4217 standard, each with a code, name, number, symbol and number of decimals. The list is the same for every customer and is maintained by Extenda.
Coins and notesThe denominations of a currency, used when cash is counted. Available for EUR, SEK and NOK.
Which currencies each store takesSwitched on and off for the whole company, a group of stores or one store. Nothing is switched on until someone does it.
The default currencyOne currency in a store's list is marked as its default: the store's main currency.
Telling other servicesWhen a store's currencies change, Currency sends a message for that store, in the same format as the service it replaced.

Who does what​

  • The customer's ERP is usually in charge. It calls the Currency API to switch a currency on or off for the whole company or for one store, and it can read back what each store takes. See Currency API.
  • The Configuration Portal is for changes made by hand, for groups of stores, and for choosing the default currency. See Switching currencies on and off in the Configuration Portal.
  • Hii Retail services and apps either receive Currency's messages or ask the Currency API. They never have to work out the company tree themselves: every message and every answer is already about one store. See Messages to other services.

The lists themselves are kept in Hii Retail's Customer Controlled Configuration (CCC), because CCC already knows the company tree and works out what each store inherits. You do not use CCC directly for currencies. The Currency API and the Configuration Portal write to it for you.

Moving from Currency & Exchange Rates​

Currency replaces the currency part of the deprecated Currency & Exchange Rates service. It publishes on the same topic, cer.public.event.currencies-changed.v1, in the same message format. The Hii Retail services that already subscribe, such as Store Data, change nothing when a customer moves over.

The deprecated Currency & Exchange Rates service and the new Currency service publish the same topic, cer.public.event.currencies-changed.v1, in the same format, so Store Data and other subscribers change nothing.

Two things are new for the customer:

  • The list of currencies is global. Customers no longer create currencies themselves, so an invalid currency cannot be added. You choose which of the 179 to switch on.
  • Currencies follow the company tree. A currency can be switched on for the whole company, a group of stores or one store. Currency works out what each store takes before it publishes anything, so subscribers still receive one message per store, in the format they already read.
