Unit of measure

Unit of measure

A unit of measurement is a definite magnitude of a quantity, defined and adopted by convention or by law, that is used as a standard for measurement of the same kind of quantity. In trade, weights and measures is often a subject of governmental regulation, to ensure fairness and transparency.

The Unit of Measure code can be used for several purposes. In retail one might use it to instruct how an Item should be sold, and how the price for this item should be calculated based on the Unit of Measure specified on the item.

Another use case might be to create a content declaration for an Item. If an Item is produced from other items, it is important to take the unit of measure into account to provide the correct amount of nutritional information and allergens, for example.
